What Motivates Employees More: Rewards or Punishments?

Although this resource is focused on employers, employees and the workplace it can still teach valuable lessons for parenting. This article breaks down the idea that threatening anyone or having them feel threatened does not produce greater results than potentially being rewarded. Motivational tactics can translate from one situation to the other, and this has been proven to be true for parenting. While consequences and punishments are absolutely necessary in any family structure, the best way to make a developing child become productive is with positive rewards. This article suggests that even sometimes the anticipation or expectation of reward can lead to more positive behaviors than feeling threatened by poor performance.
