Mindfulness Practice Increases Grey Matter Density

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has been reported to produce positive effects on psychological well-being and reduce symptoms some disorders. This study shows how brain gray matter was changed through Mindfulness practice. MRI images from sixteen healthy participants who had no previous Mindfulness history were obtained, before and after they underwent the eight-week program, as compared to 17 individuals who were not undergoing Mindfulness therapies.

Changes in gray matter concentration were investigated and it was confirmed that there were increases in gray matter concentration within the left hippocampus.

The results suggest that participation in MBSR is associated with changes in gray matter concentration in brain regions involved in learning and memory processes, emotion regulation, self-referential processing, and perspective taking.
